“After giving an illustrated talk on Opera, I was handed a mysterious package by the organizer, Ren Lexander. Checking no one was in earshot he rather melodramatically asked me to open it when I was alone and take a close look. This somewhat alarming way of handing a parcel under plain cover was, to my mind at least, worth a quicky.
And was I happy, once I found myself a quiet cubicle, I carefully undid the packaging and peeked inside. There between my hands lay a miracle. A Space Musical Odyssey.
The time is way out in the distant future…COMPUTEX the global computer knows everything and in turn is partnered by ZERO the Head of Galactic Control and his eugenically challenged side-kick 13 – rather reminiscent of Igor in Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein. They are chasing down a rebel human by the name of U-L-C 3863J16. He is on a quest to find FUN and ZERO is determined to stop him.
They travel to the planet of COITUS (no prizes for guessing the main activity)… Then on to…
GUNJIA (again no prizes)…
ANAEMIA where heavy metal music is the main form of communication. And finally…
AVALON a delightful 50’s rock and roll Grease-type beachy party place.
The music is iconic of the periods – very uplifting with some hugely amusing lyrics.
The story has obviously come from a deranged mind but boy is it a cracker.
U-L-C is sublime.
